Anthony Upshaw’s jury victory for Monsanto in a California case whose plaintiffs sought millions of dollars in damages for cancer allegedly caused by PCBs was recognized as a top defense verdict. “There was a lot of science that the jury was asked to understand in the case,” Mr. Upshaw said, noting one of the biggest challenges was to steer the jury away from the more emotional elements of the trial and back toward the science.
