Marc Sorini, commenting on a Colorado brewer’s plan to cease wholesale distribution and focus on its own tap room, cautioned that because of state franchise laws, “if somebody decides they don’t want to be selling in a state, it’s mighty hard to start again.” Mr. Sorini called the brewer’s action fairly unique but added there is a trend among newer, smaller breweries to avoid distribution and follow the winery model of establishing themselves as neighborhood or tourist destinations focused on tap room sales.
