Diann Smith said that statements made by two US Supreme Court justices regarding California’s unclaimed property escheat process constituted “a recognition that this is a revenue source and that it frequently lacks the transparency of most taxes and becomes something akin to a slush fund for some states.” Ms. Smith called the Court’s apparent willingness to hear a future challenge on unclaimed property laws “definitely a wake-up call for some states.”
