McDermott Adds Health IT Partner in Boston

Overview

BOSTON (January 20, 2015) – International law firm McDermott Will & Emery today announced that it has appointed Sarah Hogan as a partner in its Health Industry Advisory Practice Group, resident in the Boston office.

Ms. Hogan, who joins from Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C., focuses on advising clients in the health information technology (IT) and life sciences licensing areas. She counsels health care, information technology, and biotechnology companies at all stages of development on commercialization of their technology and intellectual property assets. Sarah’s work includes advising on IT contracts related to mergers and strategic alliances, licensing, outsourcing, technology development, data storage and other corporate partnering transactions.

Most recently, Ms. Hogan was integral to the contract negotiations between the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and its health insurance exchange IT vendor, helping to facilitate web-based purchases of health insurance to Bay State residents.

“Improving care at reduced cost as embraced by the Affordable Care Act has incentivized both health providers and insurers to implement more effective methods of tracking quality outcomes in order to be reimbursed. As a result, the demand for technology that ensures effective and secure sharing of patient information is critical,” explained Stephen W. Bernstein, partner and International Head of McDermott’s Health Industry Advisory Group. “As client demand for counsel who understand the intersections of patient information, technology, business and the complex regulatory environment continues to accelerate, Sarah’s wide-ranging experience will supplement our existing team and further our capabilities to continue to deliver pragmatic solutions to our clients.”

Ms. Hogan has represented both technology services companies as well as major companies in their licensing of associated technologies. She has significant experience assisting clients in managing relationships with technology vendors, including advising on technology acquisition, vendor management, privacy concerns, international matters, intellectual property protection, and related contractual issues.

Ms. Hogan is a former scientist with degrees in biotechnology and genetics and comprehensive life sciences industry knowledge. Ms. Hogan received her J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law in 2005; her M.S. in Genetics from University of New Hampshire in 1999 and her B.S. in Biotechnology from Worchester Polytechnic Institute in 1996.
