Joel Chefitz said that the Ninth Circuit decision which barred direct compensation to NCAA college athletes but approved the use of stipends to cover their costs drew “a sharp line between making sure students don’t pay out of pocket, and colleges putting money in their pockets,” because “amateurism is a core value of the NCAA.” Mr. Chefitz added that, if the decision is upheld, it could have deeper implications for similar cases that seek to challenge the idea of college athletes getting large payments for their efforts.
