CHICAGO (October 28, 2004) — McDermott Will & Emery's Summer Associate Program was ranked ninth out of 159 firms nation-wide in American Lawyer's 2004 Summer Associate Survey published in its student edition, November 2004. With 95-percent of McDermott's summer associates participating in the survey, the Firm received a firm-wide score of 4.758 out of 5.
"This recognition would not have been possible without the continued commitment of our hiring partners, recruiting staff and administrative and support staff," commented Lydia Kelley, National Hiring Partner. "Our attorneys, both partners and associates, who provided meaningful assignments and valuable feedback, as well as those who served as mentors to the summer associates, also played significant roles in the summer program's success."
McDermott scored above a 4.8 on a number of the survey questions, including associate-summer associate interaction, overall rating on place to work, attorneys who are enjoyable to work with and firm size.
In describing McDermott to other law firm students, respondents of the survey made the following comments: "A down-to-earth firm that provides a wonderful learning environment," "Forward thinking," "Professional, growing, fun and a great place to work," and "Strong sense of purpose." The Firm's Summer Associate Retreat, in which all summer associates met in our Washington, D.C. office for presentations and meetings also was noted in the survey as a highlight of the summer program.
The average of nine job satisfaction questions are used to determine each firm's overall score. The questions used for scoring ask respondents how interesting the work has been, how much "real" work was assigned, how the training and guidance measured up, how positive their interactions with partners and associates were, how well the firm communicated its goals and expectations, how accurately the firm portrayed itself in interviews, and the respondents' inclination to accept a position if one were offered.
Summer associates from the Firm's Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York Orange County, Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. offices participated in the survey. Throughout its eight U.S. offices, McDermott, Will & Emery employed more than 50 summer associates and added more than 50 first year associates this year.
