WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 3, 2008) — Today, Abbe David Lowell, head of the White-Collar Defense Practice Group in the Washington, D.C. office of McDermott Will & Emery, who has been representing Governor Jim Gibbons (R) of Nevada for the past 18 months, confirmed that the Department of Justice has closed its investigation and has indicated that there was no evidence of any wrongdoing by the Governor.
Mr. Lowell, who has represented dozens of public officials from both political parties and who has been recognized as one of the top defense attorneys in the country, spoke with Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Durham of Washington, D.C., who was looking into allegations of wrongdoing by various people and businesses in Nevada, and was told that the investigation of any allegations against Governor Gibbons had been closed.
Mr. Lowell said, "The prosecutors in the case confirmed what the Governor has been saying for the past two years—that he did nothing wrong and there was no basis for any allegations against him."
Commenting on the investigation, Mr. Lowell added, "Now, it should be crystal clear that the only persons who should be investigated or charged are those who made false allegations of wrongdoing and who tried to fuel this investigation for their own private purposes. They should be ashamed at the toll they have had on the Gibbons family and the people of Nevada should be proud to know that their governor is the hard working, honest, and ethical man they elected in the first place."
