CHICAGO (October 5, 2010) — McDermott Will & Emery is delighted to announce that partner John C. Kocoras has been named one of Chicago Lawyer’s 2010 “40 Under Forty” Illinois attorneys to watch and as a Rising Star on Ethisphere Magazine’s 2010 list of “Attorneys Who Matter,” a publication dedicated to sharing best practices in business ethics.
For “40 Under Forty,” Chicago Lawyer received more than 900 nominations for attorneys throughout Illinois, and candidates were considered across a range of criteria including intelligence, passion, success, and a desire to help the community.
Jeffrey Stone, Co-Chair of McDermott Will & Emery, commented, “At a young age John has developed deep proficiency on corporate investigations and compliance, with a focus on international anti-corruption concerns. John’s varied public and private sector experience has given him an investigative insight rarely found in a single attorney. He is an outstanding complement to our global investigations practice.”
In 2009, Mr. Kocoras joined McDermott Will & Emery as partner. Prior to McDermott, John was Managing Director and Regional Counsel for Kroll, the global corporate investigations firm. From 2000-2005 Mr. Kocoras served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Chicago where he handled high-profile cases including a health care fraud and murder prosecution that resulted in a rare federal death sentence. He completed a clerkship for former Chief Judge James C. Cacheris of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Reid Schar, an assistant U.S. attorney who worked with Mr. Kocoras, told Chicago Lawyer, “John worked just as hard whether the case was a minor embezzlement prosecution…or a high-profile terrorism case. John was the same amazing lawyer in all his cases.” "He is a dogged investigator and outstanding trial lawyer," said Scott Lassar, a partner at Sidley Austin and former U.S. Attorney. Chicago Lawyer noted that John also received a number of nominations from senior attorneys at top Chicago-area companies.
Separately, Ethisphere recognized John as a Rising Star on its annual list of “Attorneys Who Matter” on ethics and compliance. Ethisphere reported that the Rising Stars are the “best and brightest ‘up and coming’ attorneys” who “have already established themselves in the world of corporate compliance.” Ethisphere explained that outside counsel who made its list of Attorneys Who Matter “are the individuals you are best off calling when seeking advice” on compliance issues. Its selection criteria included recognized expertise, peer/client endorsements, public service, and awards and recognition.
Currently, Mr. Kocoras focuses his practice on internal investigations, white-collar criminal defense issues including Foreign Corrupt Practices Act matters and complex litigation. He is the recipient of several awards including the Award for Excellence, President’s Council for Integrity & Efficiency; the National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association’s Investigation of the Year Award; and the Inspector General’s Integrity Award, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
