MIAMI (December 1, 2010) — International law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP today announced that it has named Anthony N. (Tony) Upshaw as a partner in its Trial Practice Group, based in Miami.
Upshaw, a highly experienced and well-respected lawyer in the areas of class action, mass tort, toxic tort and product liability defense, joins McDermott from Yoss LLP, where he was a member of that firm's Tort and Insurance Department for 19 years.
"Tony Upshaw is a game changer with a clear track record of successfully defending clients in high-stakes, complex cases," noted Lazar P. Raynal, the Firm-wide head of McDermott's Trial Practice Group. "Tony is a premier trial lawyer, having tried over twenty-five cases to verdict. We recruited Tony to advance a number of strategic goals for the Trial Practice Group and the Firm." In his new position, Upshaw will play a key role in mentoring younger partners and associates, as well as in promoting diversity initiatives at McDermott.
Upshaw, a previous member of the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association represents a diverse array of corporations in product defect, business tort, toxic exposure and property damage actions both in Florida and nationally. He has been recognized for three consecutive years by The National Law Journal for obtaining a "top ten defense verdict."
At his prior firm, Upshaw served as lead counsel for one of the world's largest tobacco companies in individual follow-up cases to the national flight attendant class action lawsuit against the tobacco industry, and as counsel for a large oil company in pending benzene exposure litigation in Florida and New Jersey.
"Tony has earned a sterling reputation for fighting and winning some of the toughest court room battles in recent years," said McDermott Co-Chair Peter J. Sacripanti, who concentrates his practice on complex business and environmental disputes, including class action litigation, products liability litigation and multi-party mass tort matters. "We're delighted to welcome Tony to McDermott, where he will advise some of our largest clients in the energy, technology, aerospace and transportation industries."
"Tony's extensive trial experience, well-deserved reputation for excellence, and deep client relationships give the Firm significant new capabilities," added McDermott Co-Chair Jeffrey E. Stone, who previously served as global head of the Firm's Trial Department and head of the White-Collar Criminal Defense Practice Group. "His appointment bolsters our Trial practice in Miami, enabling us to expand the Firm's presence, and better serve our clients, in that important market."
