WASHINGTON, D.C. (FEBRUARY 10, 2011) — Sealing a deal that was first announced last October, McDermott Will & Emery LLP announced today that it has signed a final contract with Clark Enterprises and Boston Properties to occupy 171,000 square feet of Class A, office space on Capitol Hill.
The deal, which was executed on January 20, 2011, will enable McDermott to relocate its offices from 600 13th Street, NW to its new home at 500 North Capitol Street, in November 2012. The new location will put McDermott’s lawyers within steps of the U.S. Congress, the Supreme Court, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission Annex, the Tax Court, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the Thurgood Marshall Judicial Center Complex, the Library of Congress and Union Station.
In this completely refurbished new location, at the corner of North Capitol Street and E Street, N.W., McDermott will be the primary occupant. The building will be known as "The McDermott Building" with noteworthy signage clearly identifying the Firm. As part of the deal, the building will be completely renovated and upgraded with state-of-the art technology, including new mechanical and electrical systems, elevators, and an entirely new, glass façade. The building is being designed to achieve LEED Certification through the US Green Building Council.
“We’re delighted to execute this important deal and officially put the wheels in motion for our upcoming relocation,” said Bobby Burchfield, co-partner-in-charge of McDermott’s Washington, D.C. office. “We look forward to working with Boston Properties, Clark Enterprises, Gensler, Studley and all our partners to make this stunning building design a reality for the McDermott family and our clients.”
“McDermott has had extensive input into the design of key building features, including the main lobby, that are reflective of a trophy-class building,” added David E. Rogers, co-partner-in-charge of McDermott’s Washington, D.C. office. “The building will incorporate many custom features for McDermott, such as a roof-top terrace with a spectacular view of the U.S. Capitol and a 360 degree view of the D.C. landscape.”
“We’d like to thank McDermott for its cooperation and teamwork over the last few weeks to finalize the lease at 500 North Capitol Street,” said Raymond Ritchey, Executive Vice President at Boston Properties. “With this timely execution, we are now looking forward to the development of McDermott’s new headquarters, and the ‘grand opening’ in the fall of 2012.”
“The collaboration among an experienced landlord, a visionary law firm and a world-class architect will transform The McDermott Building into one of the premier addresses on Capitol Hill,” said Rebecca Owen, Senior Vice President of Clark Enterprises.
McDermott Will & Emery LLP was represented by Lois Zambo and Steve London of Studley, a global real estate advisory firm. Boston Properties and Clark Enterprises were represented by Art Santry, Phillip Thomas, Zeke Dodson and Kerri Mulligan-Salih of Cassidy Turley. The Clark Construction Group will perform the base building renovation as well as the tenant improvements and Gensler is the architect for both phases of the project.
