WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 19, 2011) – McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that partners Michael Kendall and Paul Thompson have been named winners of the 2011 Burton Award in the “Distinguished Law Firm” category.
The Burton Awards is a highly selective legal writing competition in which only 30 authors are selected each year from among the nation’s 1,000 largest law firms. This year’s award winners were judged and selected by law school professors and judges, including professors from Harvard Law School, the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and the University of Michigan Law School. The program honors partners in law firms and law school students who use plain, clear and concise language to articulate an emerging legal issue and avoid archaic, stilted legal language.
Kendall and Thompson are recognized for their co-authored article “Managing the Budget of an International White Collar Investigation” which was published in the August 17, 2010 edition of Corporate Counsel. The article outlines a detailed approach that companies can adopt to better monitor and control the costs of white-collar investigations, a growing concern for clients of all sizes who often find themselves in financial limbo as a result of such investigations. The winning article can be read here.
Michael Kendall is the international head of McDermott Will & Emery’s White-Collar and Securities Defense Practice Group, based in Boston. Paul Thompson is based in McDermott’s Washington D.C. office where he leads the White-Collar Practice and focuses his practice on white-collar criminal defense, congressional investigations, and appellate matters.
“We are delighted that Mike and Paul have been recognized for their outstanding work on a topic of major importance to our clients all over the world,” said Margaret Warner, partner and head of McDermott’s Controversies Business Unit. “McDermott is committed to assisting our clients navigate – and stay ahead of – the fast-changing area of white-collar law and top-notch analysis is one way we do that. Their innovative approach to white-collar investigations serves as a model to consider and debate.”
This year’s award ceremony will be held at the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress on June 13, 2011. The guest speakers and honored guests at the program this year include Supreme Court Justices Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor.
