CHICAGO (June 23, 2011) — China’s chief administrative authority – the State Council – has awarded John Huang of MWE China Law Offices the biennial Special State Subsidy Award for 2010 in recognition of his dedication to China’s legal profession. Mr. Huang is the only practicing attorney among the 82 award recipients from Shanghai, as honorees are typically from the fields of science, commerce, industry or academia.
McDermott is part of a strategic alliance with Shanghai-based MWE China Law Offices, which allows both firms to function as an integrated firm in essentially all respects of service delivery while offering clients the benefit of full legal representation on both sides of the Pacific and in Europe.
“We’re very proud of John for receiving this rare and prestigious honor of a lifetime,” said Jeffrey E. Stone, partner and co-chair of McDermott Will & Emery. “The Award recognizes John’s outstanding contributions to the development of China’s legal profession in a long and distinguished legal career spanning nearly three decades.”
Mr. Huang studied law in the United States on a Ford Foundation scholarship, then worked for several prominent U.S. law firms before returning to China in the early 1990s. Soon thereafter, Mr. Huang helped establish Great Wall Law Offices – a major state-owned law firm sponsored by what is now the Ministry of Commerce. Mr. Huang eventually established Great Wall’s Shanghai office.
With the liberalization of the Chinese legal profession in the late 1990s, Mr. Huang spearheaded the merger between Great Wall’s Shanghai office and two local firms, creating the privately owned Allbright Law Offices. Led by Mr. Huang and three other founding partners, Allbright became the second largest domestic Chinese law firm, both in size and revenue. In 2007, Mr. Huang and his long-time partner Kevin Qian helped establish MWE China Law Offices, which entered into a strategic alliance with McDermott Will & Emery.
MWE China Law and its strategic alliance with McDermott is visionary in its scope: the first such alliance of its kind, MWE China Law set the standard for delivering preeminent legal services within the Chinese legal market and has growth in prestige under Mr. Huang’s leadership. Numerous awards such as being named Asian Legal Business’s “2009 Rising Law Firm of the Year for China” and “2010 Employer of Choice” are a testament to this fact.
Throughout his career, Mr. Huang has advised on numerous landmark cross-border transactions and disputes for Fortune 500 and well-known Chinese enterprises while contemporaneously seeking to institutionalize international norms of the legal practice within domestic Chinese firms, as well as mentor junior Chinese attorneys.
