BOSTON (June 8, 2011) — International law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP is pleased to announce that it has been awarded The National Association of Pro Bono Professionals’ (NAPBPro) “2011 William Reece Smith Jr. Special Services to Pro Bono Award.” The award honors all of McDermott’s pro bono work in 2010, with special recognition for the Firm’s long-standing collaboration with Medical-Legal Partnership | Boston (MLP | Boston) and the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership (National Center).
The William Reece Smith Jr. Special Services to Pro Bono Award is presented on a national, regional or statewide basis to an individual or entity who has made outstanding commitments to and positive impacts on the institutions or systems of providing pro bono legal services. The award was first presented in 1992 with Mr. Smith being the first recipient.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be recognized by one of the most highly respected legal associations in the country for the Firm’s pro bono commitment to giving back to the communities of which it is a part and to assist those unable to afford legal services,” said Latonia Haney Keith, McDermott’s Pro Bono Counsel. “McDermott shares this award with all of our attorneys who have dedicated time and energy to our pro bono efforts over the past year, with a special recognition to the team in Boston. This award was made possible through that office’s innovative collaboration with MLP | Boston and the National Center and the efforts to integrate lawyers as part of the health care team treating low income populations.”
Since 2005, McDermott has been collaborating with MLP | Boston at Boston Medical Center, a groundbreaking program that addresses social determinants of health and seeks to eliminate barriers to healthcare in order to help vulnerable populations meet their basic needs and stay healthy. “Medical-legal partnership allows lawyers to practice preventive law alongside practitioners of preventive medicine,” noted Melissa Nott Davis, who, together with Jerome B. Tichner leads the Firm’s collaboration with MLP | Boston and the National Center.“ McDermott, the National Center and MLP | Boston are working together to shape a new model of legal practice and health care delivery. Now replicated at more than 200 sites across the United States and Canada, the medical-legal partnership model ensures that vulnerable patients' basic needs for food, housing, education, health care, stability and safety are met as part of a comprehensive public health strategy.”
“We are indebted to McDermott for the sheer volume and scope of its generosity, and to the broad vision of its leadership in supporting the MLP mission,” said Samantha Morton, MLP | Boston’s Executive Director and the National Center’s Interim Legal Director. “McDermott’s MLP collaboration began with a variety of individual case referrals, but has grown to encompass so much more, including technical assistance on legal ethics in the healthcare setting, graphic design to help our best-practices publications grab the audience, generous financial support that augments its myriad in-kind contributions, and development of specific subject-matter expertise in the area of disability benefits advocacy. With McDermott’s help, MLP is increasingly included on the menu of services recognized as key to patient health and well-being.”
More than 80 McDermott lawyers, summer associates, paralegals and staff have donated over 2,200 hours valued at more than $800,000 to MLP | Boston and National Center projects since 2005.
