CHICAGO (March 14, 2012) — International law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP will host the 2012 McDermott Will & Emery Urban Debate Invitational for JV Debaters in Chicago on Saturday, March 17th, in conjunction with the Chicago Urban Debate League. The Invitational will be held at the McDermott Will & Emery headquarters in downtown Chicago.
The McDermott Will & Emery JV Invitation will feature ten of the top JV teams in the LCC, Conference “A” and Conference “AA” competing in four preliminary rounds followed by a Final Round. The invitational will also include a mid-day workshop discussing “Urban Debate and the Legal Profession.” Today, some 87 percent of those participating in urban debate leagues are minority students, and 78 percent are from low-income families, according to the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues.
“This is McDermott’s third year hosting this tournament, and it has been a great success both for the students and our lawyers,” said Nathan F. Coco, McDermott Corporate partner and Board member of the Chicago Debate Commission. “The students who participate benefit tremendously from this type of challenge. In fact, studies have show that inner-city high school debaters greatly outperform their peers in terms of grades, graduation rates and college attendance.”
The Chicago Debate League (CDL), administered by a partnership between Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Debate Commission, a non-profit organization dedicated to the mission of transforming the lives of urban youth though academic debate, is the premier competitive academic debate league in the nation. Comprising fifty-nine high schools and fourteen middle schools from across the city of Chicago, the CDL is one of the nation’s oldest, largest, and most successful Urban Debate Leagues. For more information on the CDL, visit www.chicagodebateleague.org.
The Urban Debate Invitational is one of many activities that are part of McDermott’s Kids First Initiative, in which Firm lawyers and staff dedicate countless pro bono hours to mentoring and tutoring inner-city students, and encouraging them to pursue their education.
