CHICAGO (April 30, 2012) – International law firm McDermott Will & Emery announced that Jocelyn Francoeur will become the Firm's first Pro Bono Litigation Partner, effective June 1, 2012.
Ms. Francoeur, a partner in McDermott’s White Collar and Securities Defense Practice Group, will serve full-time in her new role. She will be responsible for cultivating and supervising pro bono litigation matters that provide junior attorneys with opportunities for core competency skill development.
Ms. Francoeur will work closely with the Chair of McDermott's Pro Bono Committee, Guy Collier, and the Firm's Pro Bono and Community Service Counsel, Latonia Haney Keith, as well as with Pro Bono Committee members in each of the Firm’s U.S. offices, to identify litigation initiatives that can provide training opportunities while deepening the Firm's institutional commitment to pro bono.
Through its pro bono program, McDermott seeks to bridge the justice gap for low-income individuals and families by providing critical legal services in a broad range of areas, including family law, housing, benefits, children’s rights, civil rights, discrimination, criminal defense, adoption and guardianship, elder abuse, and asylum and immigration. The Firm also provides much-needed legal assistance to small businesses and not-for-profit organizations that focus on developing and revitalizing low-income communities, supporting developed and developing countries and working to ensure a clean, safe and healthy environment for all.
“It is our pleasure to welcome Jocelyn into her new role,” said Peter J. Sacripanti, co-chair of McDermott Will & Emery. “At McDermott, we have a very robust pro bono program with extraordinary involvement by attorneys at all levels. As we looked at that caseload, we saw an opportunity to connect our associates and young partners with important pro bono matters that would allow them to make a difference in their communities while also building substantive trial experience. Jocelyn will help us accomplish our goals on both fronts.”
“As the Firm expands its commitment to pro bono litigation, Jocelyn will serve a vital role in identifying intellectually challenging cases that provide important skill development opportunities for our younger attorneys,” added Jeffrey E. Stone, co-chair of McDermott Will & Emery. “Her appointment underscores the Firm’s commitment to pro bono litigation and its importance both to those who might otherwise lack effective advocates as well as our own internal community.”
Among the initiatives Ms. Francoeur will focus on are expanding McDermott’s pro bono appellate practice and the continued recruitment of complex, high-impact litigation that will demonstrate the Firm's investment in the pro bono community. She will also work closely with junior attorneys across McDermott’s Controversies Business Unit to provide training, mentoring, and guidance on pro bono litigation matters.
Since joining the Firm in 2004, Ms. Francoeur has been an active participant in McDermott’s pro bono litigation programs. She has first- and second-chaired trials and evidentiary hearings, successfully argued criminal appeals at the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and obtained substantial relief for her clients in post-trial and habeas proceedings.
Based in Chicago, Ms. Francoeur is a member of the Firm's Pro Bono Committee and received McDermott’s Pro Bono and Community Service Award in 2007. She was recognized as an Illinois Super Lawyers "Rising Star" in 2010 and 2011 and as a Benchmark Litigation "Future Star" in 2008, 2009, and 2010. In 2009, she was selected to join the Federal Defender Panel in the Northern District of Illinois. She is a member of the Illinois and Wisconsin bars and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth and Seventh Circuits, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Trial Bar), the Eastern District of Michigan and the Eastern District of Wisconsin.
