BOSTON (June 18, 2012) — McDermott Will & Emery’s Health Industry Advisory Practice Group has once again been named the standalone Tier 1 practice by both of the legal industry’s top directory services, Chambers USA and The Legal 500 USA.
Moreover, with the new rankings, McDermott has now been designated for three consecutive years as the only Tier 1 law firm nationally in healthcare by Chambers USA: Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. This recognition, combined with the earlier rankings from The Legal 500 USA, where McDermott also earned a Tier 1 ranking in Health, marks the Firm’s undisputed leadership in the health law marketplace.
With these designations, McDermott is now the only firm to be ranked Tier 1 in healthcare nationally by all three of the legal industry’s top directories, Chambers USA, The Legal 500 USA and U.S. News-Best Lawyers.
In assessing McDermott’s unique, cross-disciplinary healthcare capabilities, Chambers wrote: “[t]his firm has attorneys skilled across the full gamut of transactional, regulatory and litigation work, making it an undisputed leader in the nationwide healthcare arena.” “McDermott is in a class by itself,” the editors wrote in assessing the Firm’s healthcare practice in Illinois. “It has the widest, deepest bench and many, many terrific lawyers.”
Chambers also recognized nine McDermott partners in their rankings of top health lawyers at the national level. Health partners nationally ranked this year include Joel Michaels, Ira Coleman, Gary Davis, Eric Gordon, Bernadette Broccolo, Christopher Jedrey, Michael Anthony, Michael Peregrine, and Practice Group Leader, Stephen Bernstein. McDermott boasts 8 partners nationally ranked in the category of Health Transactional work, or a full 28 percent of the total number of lawyers nationally ranked in this category.
At the state level, McDermott’s Healthcare capabilities were ranked Tier 1 by Chambers in California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. Some 21 McDermott health partners were specifically ranked at the state level. No other nationally ranked health practice has anywhere near this number of ranked lawyers. In California, McDermott partners ranked include Esther Chang Weese, Eric Gordon, Paul Lawrence and Ira Rappeport. In Florida, partners Ira Coleman, Gary Scott Davis and Jerry Sokol were all cited by the editors. In Illinois, Chambers recognized Michael Anthony, Bernadette Broccolo, John Callahan, Ralph DeJong, Michael Peregrine and Kerrin Slattery. In Massachusetts, Charles Buck, Christopher Jedrey and Stephen Bernstein were individually cited. In New York, Chambers recognized David Ivill. In Washington, D.C., Guy Collier, Joel Michaels, T. Reed Stephens and Eric Zimmerman were all ranked by Chambers.
Similarly, the 2012 edition of The Legal 500 United States ranked McDermott as the only Tier 1 firm in the area of health care for the second year in a row. The editors noted that the Firm’s Health Industry Advisory Practice Group offered “a vast array of knowledgeable people on which to draw, including nationally known experts that provide outstanding service.” Health partners Gary Davis, Eric Gordon and Chris Jedrey were named “Leading Lawyers” in the service providers category. Health partner Joel Michaels was named a “Leading Lawyer” in the health insurers category, being “widely respected for his knowledge of provider/payor relationships and having extensive experience representing the insurance industry.”
“We are honored once again to be recognized as the number one health law firm in the United States by these very prestigious directory services,” said Stephen W. Bernstein, partner and head of McDermott’s Health Industry Advisory practice. “We are proud that we are seen as the ‘go-to’ health law firm when the stakes are high. Still, we do not take our unique status for granted. We plan to do everything we can to continue to provide our clients with top-notch service, creativity and the value-added advice that is so much in demand in this ever-changing industry and major segment of the economy.”
Chambers USA's rankings and editorial commentary are based on independent research, and interviews with clients and other purchasers of legal services. Chambers & Partners is one of the premier directories for legal services and in a recent survey of 20,000 in-house counsel over half reported that their directory of choice when reviewing law firms and individual lawyers is Chambers & Partners.
The Legal 500 series of guides has been produced by UK publisher Legalease since 1987 and includes The Legal 500 UK, The Legal 500 Europe, Middle East & Africa, and The Legal 500 Asia Pacific. The guides provide independent, unbiased commentary on the leading law firms and lawyers in the United States and around the globe, and single out those firms and individuals providing the highest levels of legal counsel and service. The 2012 edition of The Legal 500 United States incorporates the results of research and client interviews and is distributed to in-house counsel and executives worldwide.
