CHICAGO (June 5, 2012) – McDermott Will & Emery has been named one of the country’s leading law firms in the 2012 edition of The Legal 500 United States. McDermott was recognized for its national strength in the areas of antitrust, employee benefits and executive compensation, finance, health, insurance, immigration, intellectual property, litigation, media, technology and telecoms, mergers, acquisitions & buyouts, tax, and white-collar.
The Firm’s total practice area and individual rankings both have increased from the 2011 edition. Additionally, fifteen McDermott partners were named “Leading Lawyers” in their respective disciplines -- more than double last year’s figure. The Firm was ranked in 32 separate practice areas (seven of which were new this year), with 114 citations for its individual lawyers. McDermott was also described as a “go-to group” in healthcare and patent litigation.
For the second year in a row, Legal 500 ranked McDermott as the only Tier 1 firm in the area of healthcare. The editors noted that the Firm’s Health Industry Advisory Practice Group offered “a vast array of knowledgeable people on which to draw, including nationally known experts that provide outstanding service.” Health partners Gary Davis, Eric Gordon and Chris Jedrey were named “Leading Lawyers” in the service providers category. Health partner Joel Michaels was named a “Leading Lawyer” and is recognized in the area of health insurers, being “widely respected for his knowledge of provider/payor relationships and having extensive experience representing the insurance industry.”
This year, McDermott was also named a Tier 1 firm in M&A (middle-market deals). Attorneys within the Firm’s Corporate Advisory Practice Group were praised by clients as being “committed to short turnaround times, giving very solid advice and service, having excellent judgment” and being “very savvy and client-focused lawyers.” Partner Timothy Alvino was named a “Leading Lawyer” and also recognized were Practice Group Leader David Goldman, Laurence Bronska, Thomas Conaghan, Amy Ferrer, Todd Finger, Brooks Gruemmer, John Hammond, Mark Harris, Miles Hughes, Amy Leder, Frederic Levenson, Andrew McCune, Thomas McGavin, Mark Mihanovic, Harris Siskind, William Smith, Mark Stein and David Taub. Additionally, Tax partner Andrea Kramer was cited for her work in structured finance.
In addition, the Firm’s Controversies Business Unit Leader Margaret (Peg) Warner was named a “Leading Lawyer” in the Insurance category, with regard to her advice to insurers.
McDermott’s Employee Benefits, Compensation, Labor & Employment Practice Group was ranked Tier 2 nationally and recognized as being one of the largest national EBEC practices. Practice Group Leader David Rogers was selected as a “Leading Lawyer” with extensive, positive client comments. Partners Joseph Adams, Andrew Liazos, William Merten, Ira Mirsky, Stephen Pavlick, Karen Simonsen and Susan Schaefer were recognized individually. Additionally, Trial partners Wilber Boies, Nancy Ross and Chris Scheithauer were cited for their work in ERISA litigation.
The Firm also improved by one tier in the area of data protection and privacy, now holding a Tier 2 spot. The group is co-headed by “Leading Lawyer” Heather Egan Sussman, who is credited with being ‘smart, responsive and client-oriented’ and Health partner Daniel Gottlieb, who was “recommended for his excellent technical knowledge.” In addition, Health Industry Practice Group Leader Stephen Bernstein as well as Health partner Bernadette Broccolo and Intellectual Property partner Jorge Arciniega were all cited in this category.
McDermott continued to be ranked Tier 2 in Life Sciences law. Health partner Glenn Engelmann and White Collar & Securities Defense partner David Rosenbloom were recognized in this category.
In the area of not-for-profit finance, McDermott was cited as “one of the most experienced firms routinely operating in the not-for-profit sector,” with health partners Michael Peregrine recommended and Robert Louthian III called ‘very knowledgeable’ regarding tax exemption.
In the area of Patent Prosecution (Utility and Design Patents) McDermott was again ranked a Tier 2 law firm. Selected for individual recognition were Intellectual Property Prosecution Trademark & Strategy Practice Group Leader Mark J. Itri as well as partners Stephen Becker, Carey Jordan and Toby Kusmer. The Firm rose to Tier 3 in patent litigation (full coverage). The editors called McDermott a “go-to firm” for patent litigation nationally, noting that the Firm handles a high volume of cases. Directly cited were “formidable litigator and strategist” Yar Chaikovsky; Leading Lawyer Eric Hagen, “a patent litigator with superb judgment who gets results”; and Joel Freed, who was said to have “tremendous breadth and depth of experience for trial.” The editors pointed to the Firm’s ‘consistently outstanding’ trade secrets team, including Hagen, Terrence McMahon and Anthony de Alcuaz, who were called ‘one of the best’ for ‘outstanding advice on technology developments, handling of customer data, employee hiring and departures, and protection of confidential information’, according to clients. Other partners recognized in this area were Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group Leader Sarah Columbia, John Dabney, William Gaede, Blair Jacobs, and Robert Zelnick.
McDermott’s comprehensive tax capabilities were honored in across a range of areas including domestic tax (Central, East Coast and West Coast regions), financial products, international tax and tax controversy. Clients describe McDermott as being providers of “outstanding client service with valuable insights, a strong international focus, [and a] significant SALT practice.” U.S. & International Tax Practice Group Leader Lowell Yoder was “noted for his scholarly approach to the law and business acumen,” while State & Local Tax Practice Group Leader Jane Wells May received individual recognition. Other Tax partners cited included “Leading Lawyers” Tom Jones, Andrea Kramer and Jean Pawlow as well as Thomas Borders, Frederick Chilton, Elizabeth Erickson, Peter Faber, Thomas Giegerich, John Lutz, William Pomierski and Stephen Wells.
McDermott also improved in antitrust, a practice that has “not only expanded in size, but enhanced its offering in the healthcare sector through the arrival of Jeffrey Brennan, former head of the FTC’s healthcare division.” Antitrust/Competition Practice Group Leader Joseph Winterscheid is recognized for his work on merger control, abuse of dominance cases and distribution counseling. Working closely with him are “business savvy” partners Joel Grosberg and Raymond Jacobsen, the Firm’s Regulatory and Governmental Affairs Business Unit Leader. Also recognized is David Marx, who focuses of regulatory and government affairs, and Alison Smith, who is actively involved in the oil and gas sector. In the area of International Trade litigation, Regulatory Practice Group Leader Carolyn Gleason was cited along with partners David Levine and Jay Eizenstat.
