CHICAGO (July 10, 2012) – International law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP today announced the appointments of two of the nation’s most highly regarded tax litigation lawyers, Roger Jones and Andrew Roberson, as partners in the Firm’s Chicago office. Specializing in a full range of tax controversy matters, Jones and Roberson represent taxpayers of all types, including numerous Fortune 500 companies. The two join McDermott from an AmLaw 5 law firm where they have worked together since 2005.
Mr. Jones is nationally ranked by Chambers USA, and focuses his practice in the area of tax controversy and international tax law. Noting "his stellar reputation for tax controversy," Chambers recently recognized Mr. Jones as having "significant success in tax case appeals," ranking him "among the elite in presenting tax arguments on appeal." He has represented clients in over 75 matters at all levels of the Federal court system, including the United States Supreme Court. He has been equally successful in settling tax disputes short of litigation through administrative appeals procedures, mediation and other alternative dispute resolution processes.
Mr. Roberson also specializes in tax controversy matters and has been successful in settling tax disputes through the administrative appeals and Fast Track processes. Mr. Roberson has extensive experience in Tax Court practice and procedure, corporate reorganizations, TEFRA, tax accounting and substance/form issues. Active in the pro bono community, Mr. Roberson works with the Tax Clinic at the Center for Economic Progress to assist low-income individuals in tax disputes with the Internal Revenue Service and the Illinois Department of Revenue.
The two partners join McDermott’s tax controversy team which regularly represents some of the world’s largest corporations on complex U.S. and international tax issues, often with hundreds of millions of dollars in controversy. McDermott’s tax controversy group includes former Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Department of Justice federal tax litigators.
“It is my honor to welcome Roger and Andrew to McDermott,” said Lowell D. Yoder, partner and head of McDermott’s U.S. and International Tax Practice Group. “They are two of the best tax litigators in the nation and will bolster our already very strong capabilities in this area. This is particularly important now, as companies of all sizes find themselves fending off frivolous, misguided legal challenges, audits and appeals in court. Our clients will be extremely well served with Roger and Andrew advocating for their interests.”
“We’re delighted to join McDermott as it continues to expand its comprehensive tax law capabilities,” said Mr. Jones. “McDermott has one of the world’s most exceptional tax law brands and we look forward to working closely with many of the most notable practitioners in the field. We’re excited about the possibilities for client service and results.”
Last month, McDermott announced another key addition to its international tax practice: a seven-person transfer pricing team lead by well-known industry leaders Mark Martin and Cym Lowell. McDermott has continued to amass unmatched professional tax experience and depth. The Firm’s tax services interrelate so as to support and complement one another in order to deliver timely, effective and reasonably-priced tax assistance. McDermott represents more than half of the Fortune 100 companies in tax matters on a regular basis.
