WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 22, 2013) — International law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP today announced that John Warren, a veteran policy maker at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), has joined the Firm’s Health Industry Advisory Practice Group as Senior Director of Health Policy in its Washington, D.C. office.
Mr. Warren brings over twenty years of CMS policy experience, spanning a number of the agency’s key initiatives, to his new role. At CMS, he held a variety of senior leadership positions in Medical Review, Payment Policy and the Innovations Center on topics ranging from hospital, physician, laboratory and drug payment to Medicare Administrative Contractor contracting. As Senior Technical Advisor to the Hospital and Ambulatory Policy Group at the Center for Medicare, Warren provided high level consultative assistance to various organizations within CMS. At McDermott, he will advise clients on Medicare and Medicaid policy and advocacy strategy, as well as interactions with the agency.
“We are delighted to welcome John to McDermott's Health legislative team,” said Stephen Bernstein, partner and International head of the Firm’s Health Industry Advisory Practice Group. “John brings a wealth of regulatory and agency knowledge that few outside CMS possess. As a senior policymaker at CMS, he acquired a depth of knowledge and understanding of Medicare rules, regulations and reimbursement policies that impact our clients every day. John brings tremendous value to our clients and his arrival will help us to ensure that McDermott continues to be the top-ranked health care law firm in the nation.”
Warren will serve clients at the intersection of McDermott’s Health and Government Strategies practices. He joins a team of national Medicare law and policy authorities who also are experienced government advocacy strategists. By combining knowledge of Medicare law with an understanding of and experience with the legislative and rulemaking processes, McDermott’s health government strategies practice offers clients a distinct advantage in government affairs services.
The addition of Warren is the latest move by the Firm as it expands its health policy and regulatory capabilities to stay ahead of the changing landscape in Washington. On January 7th, McDermott announced that health regulatory lawyer Jason Caron joined the Firm as a partner in Washington. In 2011 senior health lobbyist and legislative director Andrea Bergman joined the Firm.
With an over 30-year history of serving the health care industry, McDermott has one of the largest and most prestigious health practice groups in the world. The Firm has a long history of representing health care providers of all kinds - including nonprofit and for-profit hospital organizations, health plans, skilled nursing companies, physician groups, home health agencies and durable medical equipment providers, in structuring and closing mergers and acquisitions, similar change-of-control transactions, as well as counseling and advising on cutting edge compliance matters.
McDermott is the only law firm to receive Tier 1 rankings in health care nationally by all of the industry’s top legal directories: Chambers USA, The Legal 500 USA and U.S. News–Best Lawyers. This month, the Firm’s Health practice was named a “Practice Group of the Year” by Law360. For three consecutive years Chambers USA ranked McDermott’s health practice as the only Tier 1 practice in the United States (2010–2012).
