McDermott's inclusion in the GAR 100 is credited in large part to important new lateral hires over the past year. "Jacob Grierson joined the Firm’s Paris office from another major law firm, bringing particular expertise in ICC work," write the editors. "This was followed, towards the end of the year, by the hire of two investment arbitration specialists, Dr. Sabine Konrad in Frankfurt and Lisa Richman in Washington, DC. The pair have worked on some high-profile ICSID matters, including defending Germany against claims by Swedish nuclear power company Vattenfall and representing investors in disputes with the governments of Costa Rica and the Philippines."
In addition to McDermott's new international arbitration partners, GAR's editors noted several recent victories by the firm's international arbitration attorneys, including the firm's US$230 million award against Getty Petroleum Marketing in an ICDR arbitration headed by Boston partner Tony Bongiorno. GAR also noted praise that it received from its interviews with McDermott's clients, including client commentary that Ted Howes, the practice Group leader, "provided great insight on arbitration strategy," prepared "concise and eloquent memorials" and "quickly identified issues in order to bring a resolution to highly complex legal questions and cut down on potential costs."
McDermott’s arbitration group is headed from New York by partner Ted Howes. The rest of the group is divided between Frankfurt, Paris, Shanghai (thanks to an alliance with a local firm), Düsseldorf, Rome, Boston and Washington, DC.
