August 22, 2013 – Health partner Jennifer Geetter has been named “Pro Bono Global Lawyer of the Year” by The American Lawyer. She was recognized for her steadfast commitment and extraordinary skill as a member of a McDermott team that obtained asylum for a client from Afghanistan who escaped an arranged marriage to her cousin, a well-connected Taliban sympathizer. Our client endured many hardships before secretly fleeing to the United States with the help of a wealthy relative, who was later killed in retribution.
Along with Firm lawyers Cathy Scheineson and Beth Hatef and two McDermott alums, Ms. Geetter worked with several experts to develop a successful strategy based on religious, political and social persecution. The case was referred to McDermott by the Tahirih Justice Center.
