CHICAGO (August 5, 2013) - Employee Benefits partner Todd A. Solomon has been selected to receive the National LGBT Bar Association’s prestigious Allies for Justice Award. The award honors legal professionals who, in their positions of leadership, have supported lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals, and made extraordinary contributions to the broader LGBT Community and inroads for equality under the law.
"I am extraordinarily honored to receive the Allies for Justice Award from the National LGBT Bar Association,” said Mr. Solomon, who has become a nationally recognized leader on employee benefits for same-sex partners and LGBT legal issues in the United States. “I have always attempted to focus a portion of my practice on serving the underprivileged and fighting discrimination. But my strongest passion as an attorney has been working on attaining equal rights for gay and lesbian couples and the LGBT community at large, and it has been a pleasure to assist companies, including my own Firm, with the implementation of comprehensive benefits for LGBT employees.”
“Todd has been an Ally for Justice well before LGBT workplace equality was a common topic among employers,” said Lisa A. Linsky, partner-in-charge of LGBT Diversity and Inclusion at McDermott. “Todd is a trusted counselor, partner and friend who embodies the best qualities of a straight ally. His generosity knows no limits and his commitment to full equality for LGBT individuals runs deep. We are very proud of Todd and his many accomplishments, and agree that he is a worthy recipient of this year’s National LGBT Bar Association’s Allies for Justice Award.”
As a member of McDermott’s LGBT Diversity Subcommittee and its Diversity Committee, Mr. Solomon is involved in evaluating McDermott’s domestic partner benefits policies and working with businesses in Chicago to form strategic alliances in order to advocate for LGBT rights in the workplace. He is also a national leader in the area of pro bono and community service and is deeply involved in the Chicago legal aid community, as well as national chair of McDermott’s Pro Bono & Community Service Committee and is a member of the Firm’s Charitable Foundation.
“I truly believe that the day is coming soon where people will be expressing disbelief at the inequality federal and state law has historically imposed on LGBT individuals, and I am proud to have had some part in this most worthy fight,” added Mr. Solomon. “It has been a privilege to work on these issues from the ground floor, and it warms my heart to see such strides being made in the area of state and, recently, federal law. I know the best is yet to come.”
Mr. Solomon will be presented with his award on August 9, 2013 at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco, California during the 2013 Allies for Justice Award Reception, held in conjunction with the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Annual Conference. For more information, visit www.lgbtbar.org.
