FRANKFURT (September 25, 2013) – International arbitration lawyer Dr. Sabine Konrad has been appointed by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany for a second six-year term on the Panel of Arbitrators of the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
This is a rare distinction reflecting the high esteem in which Dr. Konrad is held in her field. ICSID is the world's principal forum for investor-state arbitrations, which concern disputes arising under multilateral and bilateral investment treaties, national investment promotion legislation and investment contracts. Each member state may designate only four candidates to the Panel of Arbitrators.
ICSID may only make appointments from its Panel of Arbitrators. ICSID appoints tribunal presidents in case of disagreement between the parties and all members of annulment committees under the ICSID Convention.
“We are very proud of Sabine for this appointment,” said B. Ted Howes, Head of McDermott Will & Emery’s International Arbitration Group. “It is a great honor and once again demonstrates Sabine’s reputation and prestige in the important field of investor-state treaty arbitration.”
Dr. Konrad has a strong track record of resolving high-profile, cross-border disputes, particularly in the areas of international commercial arbitration and public international law. She regularly advises investors and governments in matters of investment protection. In 2005, Ms. Konrad was involved in setting up the Frankfurt International Arbitration Center, a cooperation facility of ICSID for investment treaty arbitrations in Germany, and in 2007 she was designated for the first time to the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators. Dr. Konrad also founded the Frankfurt International Arbitration Moot Court, the leading moot court internationally in the investment treaty field, which will take place for the seventh time from 10 to 15 March 2014. She is also a member of the roster of arbitrators of the International Development Law Organisation (IDLO)., an international organization with 27 member states and organisations.
McDermott Will & Emery’s International Arbitration Group is composed of an integrated team of lawyers spread across three continents. The Group regularly represents U.S. and non-U.S. clients in international arbitrations around the globe, and has experience resolving transnational commercial disputes under all of the world’s major international arbitration institutions and rules.
