December 20, 2013 - For the second consecutive year, McDermott was named to Global Competition Review's (GCR) "Global Elite" list, which is comprised of the top 20 international antitrust and competition practices. In addition to our "Elite" global ranking, McDermott garnered "Elite" status in Illinois, "Highly Recommended" in Washington, D.C. for Government Antitrust, and “Recommended” in Germany (Brussels-based lawyers), Italy and France.
GCR’s Description of McDermott’s Global Practice:
McDermott Will & Emery has kept its place on the Global Elite after advising on big cases this year, ranging from mergers to cartels.
The firm’s Washington, D.C. office has advised pharmaceutical company Amgen on its US$10.4 billion acquisition of rival Onyx. Partners Raymond Jacobsen, Jon Dubrow and William Diaz led the team.
Two of those lawyers, Mr. Jacobsen and Mr. Dubrow, together with Warren Rosborough, played an active role in getting the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) to approve the deal between beer brewers AB-InBev and Modelo, which at one point looked in doubt. McDermott advised wine and spirits producer Constellation Brands, which offered to buy Modelo’s US beer business to address the DoJ’s concerns. The DoJ accepted the remedy proposal, and deputy assistant attorney general Renata Hesse said Constellation was key to the deal.
The Washington, D.C. office is not the only practice acting as counsel on big mergers. McDermott’s German practice, led by Who’s Who Legal nominee Martina Maier, is advising Telefónica’s proposed takeover of Germany’s E-Plus Group from KPN. The deal will bring together the third and fourth-largest mobile operators in the country.
Ms. Maier also heads up the firm’s European practice, which is representing three airports in ongoing European Commission state aid investigations.
Meanwhile, Jacques Buhart’s French antitrust practice is acting as counsel to camera maker Canon on several merger cases, including its acquisition of medical imaging product manufacturer Median Technologies and Supersonic Imagine.
