“Compliance with civil and criminal health care laws and regulations has become more complex than ever,” said Jeffrey E. Stone, co-chair of McDermott, a premier international law firm with offices in 19 major cities worldwide. “We want to provide lawyers, compliance officers and other professionals with the information and tools to guide their institutions in this rapidly shifting terrain.”
Added Peter John Sacripanti, co-chairman of McDermott and chair of the firm’s Executive Committee, “This initiative brings together our expertise in health care, white-collar criminal defense, and criminal/civil liability to help leading payers and providers avoid potential hazards as the business of health care swiftly evolves.
The new web site is part of McDermott’s larger effort to inform clients and health care organizations of the latest developments in health care law and regulation.
“In surveys, general counsel tell us they view regulatory enforcement as a major area of concern to them,” said Michael W. Peregrine, a partner in McDermott’s Chicago office who advises numerous hospitals, health insurers and integrated health systems. “They tell us that it is also a concern for their boards and audit committees, as they respond to new regulatory guidance on their oversight duties from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.”
Peregrine also noted that the U.S. Department of Justice recently signaled major changes in its posture towards health care fraud prosecution and the value it places on corporate cooperation in investigations. He added that several major health care enforcement-related cases are expected to be decided this year, adding complexity to this dynamic area.
“Our new online site is the go-to resource to keep abreast of these developments in health care compliance and white collar defense as they happen—the decisions, the enforcement actions, the policy statements—as well as analysis and discussion by the McDermott team,” said Peregrine. “Our digital and online resources will grow to include a webcast series, webinars, and other interactive content to enable health care professionals to learn about the latest compliance and defense-oriented strategies from McDermott.”
McDermott is ranked as the top health care law firm in the U.S. by Chambers & Partners, the independent publisher that has been ranking lawyers and law firms since 1990, and has achieved that distinction every year since 2010. Most recently, 142 McDermott lawyers were selected by their peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® 2015, published by Woodward White.
