Equality Illinois (EQIL) was founded in 1991 to secure, protect and defend full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. Each year EQIL recognizes law firms that demonstrate leadership in providing equal treatment for LGBT lawyers, staff, and the community at large.
“We are honored to once again be recognized by Equality Illinois,” said McDermott co-chair Jeffrey E. Stone. “We greatly respect their hard work and dedication as they continue to make strides in the effort to secure full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. McDermott takes great pride in seeing our attorneys stand up for those who have suffered injustice and discrimination in the LGBT community, and we are dedicated to providing a workplace that reflects our commitment to ensuring that everyone is treated equally.”
“We are very pleased to receive EQIL's recognition for our work in creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive workplace for all LGBT attorneys and staff,” added McDermott co-chair Peter J. Sacripanti. “We are dedicated to providing our employees with a culture and environment that values and nurtures diversity and inclusion, and we are proud to serve as an example for other law firms to follow.”
McDermott has a long history of promoting LGBT policies both internally as well as externally. The Firm scored a perfect score of 100 percent on the 2015 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a national benchmarking survey and report on corporate policies and practices related to LGBT workplace equality, administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. McDermott has earned a perfect score every year since it began participating in CEI in 2006, making the Firm one of the “Best Places to Work” in the United States for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. Also, McDermott in its role as pro bono counsel to The Mattachine Society of Washington, DC, filed an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in the recently decided consolidated same-sex marriage cases. McDermott’s amicus brief provided an important historical framework in an effort to help the Court recognize and prevent further government discrimination against LGBT Americans. The Firm’s 2014 Social Responsible Report highlights the Firm’s partnership with The Mattachine Society of Washington, DC as well as many other ways in which McDermott used its talents and experience to help the LGBT community.
McDermott’s commitment to diversity is founded on the belief that diversity is necessary to achieve excellence in all aspects of client service. The Firm is committed to a culture that values and nurtures diversity and appreciates its importance in attracting and retaining exceptional talent. To meet this commitment, McDermott has established diversity programs and practices which have helped the Firm to encourage a breadth of ideas, experiences, perspectives and insights that are necessary to meet the challenges of today's global economy.
