WASHINGTON, DC (December 20, 2016) — Bernard (“Bernie”) J. Knight, Jr., partner in McDermott’s Intellectual Property Practice Group, has been appointed by the Secretary of Commerce to the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Public Advisory Committee (PPAC). Mr. Knight’s appointment is for a three-year term, effective December 1, 2016.
Mr. Knight was chosen to represent the interests of the diverse users of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) based on his substantial background and achievement in intellectual property. As a member of the PPAC, he will advise the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO on the policies, goals, performance, budget, user fees, and other matters relating to the patent system. The PPAC also prepares an annual report of the USPTO patent operations that is provided to Congress and made available to stakeholders.
“It is an honor to have a McDermott partner appointed to such a high-level Government advisory role,” said Sarah Chapin Columbia, global head of McDermott's Intellectual Property Practice. “Bernie’s appointment to the PPAC speaks to his in-depth knowledge of the US patent system, which will be a great asset to the USPTO in its mission to provide the highest quality service to patent owners in this country. We could not be more proud of Bernie, and we look forward to all that he will accomplish with his appointment.”
Mr. Knight served as the general counsel for the USPTO during the design and implementation of the landmark America Invents Act (AIA). During this time, he was involved in developing the procedures behind some of the AIA’s key provisions. As a result of his accomplishments, Mr. Knight was recently named an “Intellectual Property Trailblazer” by the National Law Journal.
