Robert Underwood suggested that under newly installed director of the Patent and Trademark Office Andrei Iancu, “I think what you might see is sort of an internal drive to, ‘Let’s curtail shenanigans,’” by granting “good, high-quality patents” for things like drugs that are truly novel rather than simple iterations of existing molecules or formulas.” However, he continued, “real game changers [are] going to require Congress to do something.”
