Richard (Rick) Welsh has served as lead trial, appellate and arbitration counsel for well-known companies in their bet-the-company disputes. His work spans a wide range of industries, including energy, entertainment, finance, hospitality, insurance, retail, real estate, satellite technology and video gaming.
Rick's cases have ranged from complex class actions to commercial contract and tort disputes throughout the United States, including in California, Florida, Hawaii, New York, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. In many of his cases, his teams have obtained summary dismissal, even where they replaced prior counsel well into high-stakes matters gone awry. Some of these have been reported in leading publications, including the front page of The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.
While in law school, Rick received the Boalt Hall Award for Excellence in Legal Writing and was on the National Mock Trial Team.
Before college, Richard served as a noncommissioned officer in the highly selective and demanding 75th Airborne Ranger Regiment, which is part of the US military's Joint Special Operations Command. He draws heavily from this experience in leading McDermott's litigation teams in disputes against teams from other international firms.
Richard has lectured on appellate and trial advocacy at Loyola and UCLA law schools, and on climate change law, arbitration and commercial dispute resolution.
