Noble C. Woo*, PhD, focuses on prosecution of foreign and domestic patent applications in the areas of materials science, microelectronics, micro-electro-mechanical systems, laser and optical systems, magnetic thin film devices, cleantech and energy-related technologies, including lithium ion battery and various other electrochemical systems.
Noble has an extensive and diverse technical background in physics, as well as materials science and engineering of various nanotechnology-related disciplines. He studied micro- and nanostructure-property relationships in lithium-ion battery cathode and anode materials using analytical characterization techniques, such as FIB/SEM, SEM, EDX, TEM, XPS, XRD and AFM. He also studied the material science of multilayer thin film systems and fabricated nano-calorimeters, investigated composition-microstructure-property relationships in thin film alloys suitable for flexible electronics, fabricated various MEMS and semiconductor microelectronics devices, and designed and built a high-throughput combinatorial measurement system for rapid characterization of thin film properties.
Prior to joining McDermott, Noble was a patent technical advisor at an international law firm and an associate principal at an advanced battery materials and design company. Before leaving for industrial research, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University. He also worked as a rare-metal research fellow at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland.
Noble earned his bachelor’s degree in physics, and his master’s and doctorate’s degree in physical chemistry.
