Hospitals, health care organizations, physicians and other providers should consider participating in the Open Door Forum conference call to be hosted on June 24, 2010, by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to discuss Medicare’s shared savings program and Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). The call will be held from 2:00–4:00 pm EDT. (Dial: +1 800 837 1935 Conference ID 82156293. For TTY Communication Services available to the Hearing Impaired, dial 711 or +1 800 855 2880.)
The purpose of the call is for CMS to solicit input from physicians, physician associations, hospitals and other stakeholders who are potentially interested in participating in the shared savings program. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act provides for several coordinated care demonstration programs, thereby emphasizing innovation in health care delivery models. The shared savings program must be established no later than January 1, 2012. The basic thrust of the program is to offer financial incentives to any ACO that can efficiently produce high quality health care for a defined population of Medicare beneficiaries.
CMS will open the conference call with a brief presentation on the statutory framework for the shared savings program. During the conference call, CMS will seek stakeholder comments on multiple issues involved in the shared savings program, including:
- Joint accountability among providers in the formation and use of ACOs
- Cost and quality metrics to assess performance of ACOs in the program
- Attribution of Medicare beneficiaries to ACOs
- Benchmarks for purposes of defining shared savings
- Coordination with other value-based purchasing initiatives
- Risk adjustment
- Medicare beneficiary protections
