Legal Professionals

Overview

Making the leap to a new law firm is an important decision, to say the least. You’ve spent years fostering client relationships and a network of legal and professional contacts…and now you’re looking for a place to grow them even further. You want the perfect fit and a smooth transition – and so do we.

You’ve probably already visited other sections of our website to get a better sense of our Firm, our culture, our client services and our lawyers. To take the next step and learn more about lateral recruitment opportunities, please contact our legal recruiting contacts for more information.

A note to search firms and recruiting agencies: McDermott does not accept unsolicited online submissions and resumes from agencies. Recruiting agency contacts must be made through the Legal Recruiting Department at the office in which the agency is seeking to place a candidate.

Lateral Associate

What do you want from a law firm? Substantive, meaningful work? Discipline-specific career development? Transparent, honest expectations about what it means to balance life in the office, at the client site, and with family and friends?

As a member of the McDermott team, we believe that we can provide all of this, and more:

  • Our associates are actively involved in client teams, whether preparing pitches, meeting key executives, developing a transactional or litigation strategy, researching legal developments and precedent, or deposing witnesses and preparing experts for testimony.
  • Our comprehensive and fully integrated approach to training, mentoring, evaluation and promotion helps our lawyers achieve excellence from the day they walk in the door to the day they retire.
  • McDermott has been honored by Working Mother magazine, Flex-Time Lawyers, the Minority Corporate Counsel Association and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation as among the nation’s top employers, and our pro bono and community service initiatives provide opportunities to give back to the communities in which we live and work

Lateral Partner

Moving to a new law firm is exciting. In some cases, it’s also the easy part. It’s what comes after that is often the most challenging.

At McDermott, we know what lateral transfers experience when they join a new firm. Many of our lawyers moved to McDermott well after establishing a legal career and reputation at another firm, as in-house counsel, or in positions of responsibility in law enforcement and regulatory agencies. We know what it’s like to take such an important leap of faith.

At McDermott, our collegial environment helps newcomers feel comfortable and welcome immediately. Each Firm office provides an orientation on a new lawyer’s first day, where we explain the Firm’s technology, support resources, processes and procedures to help make the transition as seamless as possible.

Our local orientations are supplemented by a professional development orientation. In addition, the more than 250 training programs offered through McDermott University and the monthly practice group meetings are excellent ways for laterals to meet their colleagues and learn what areas of practice and focus exist within the Firm. We encourage new lawyers to participate in Firm committees and to get involved in practice- and office-sponsored happy hours, welcome breakfasts and the like, all of which help laterals meet their new colleagues immediately.

We are committed to recognizing top-tier lawyers (and lawyering) from throughout the Firm, whether they began their careers at McDermott or joined us after establishing their legal practices. In fact, many of our practice group leaders and members of the Management Committee came from other firms seeking a platform of teamwork and collaboration.

Lateral Non-Lawyer Professional

Providing top-quality legal counsel and services is a team effort. Patent agents, scientific advisors and other experienced professionals are valued, essential contributors to many of our client engagements.

If you’re looking to add your talents and energy to an excellence-driven team, you should know that we’re looking for motivated individuals interested in contributing to our culture of client service, excellence and collegiality. We’re also committed to diversity in the workplace, to maintaining the core values that govern how we work with each other and with clients, and to providing the tools and professional-development resources necessary to take your career to an even higher level.
