UK Supreme Court Rules on Brexit

In Depth

The UK Supreme Court ruled by majority of eight to three on January 24, 2017 that Article 50 cannot be triggered without an Act of Parliament sanctioning that course. Any change to the rights of UK residents granted by law must be authorized by Parliament.

However, there is no need to consult with the devolved administrations of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, which cannot as a matter of law block the UK’s decision to leave the EU.
