Joanne Ludovici said concerning the NCAA’s aggressive defense of its trademarked “March Madness” term for the college basketball championships, “It looks a little heavy-handed, but they do have to control the brand. If you own trademarks for a very long time … there’s nothing wrong with letting people know that they can’t just misuse them, even if it’s because they love the NCAA.” Ms. Ludovici added that “an educational campaign out front of the message and not behind it is a good way to go” for brand protection.
