UK Government Selects McDermott to Advise on Three Post-Brexit International Trade Negotiations
The United Kingdom’s Department for International Trade has awarded a contract to international law firm McDermott Will & Emery, alongside consortium partners UK-based TLT and Canada-based Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG), to advise on three crucial trade agreements: the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) – a multinational free trade agreement including Canada, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam – as well as two bilateral free trade agreements with Canada and Mexico.
This new contract follows the consortium’s appointment to the UK Government’s trade law panels in early 2021 and will also include a carefully curated network of sub-contractor law firms across 11 different jurisdictions.
“Trade negotiations of this size are significant, given the potential impact they will have on the future economic opportunities for the United Kingdom and its position relative to key partner nations around the globe,” Joanne Osendarp, co-head of McDermott’s International Trade group said. “Our team is one of the strongest in the world when it comes to trade negotiations and we look forward to bringing those skills to bear as the UK government navigates this complex global trade landscape.”
Tim Hruby, co-lead of the McDermott team within the consortium, added, “Each part of the consortium with TLT and BLG is perfectly matched with one another. We each bring unique advantages from different past negotiations, and we are all focused on delivering the highest level of client service and excellence.”
