Overview
With more than 20 years of patent law experience, Edward DesJardins, PhD*, focuses his practice on patent procurement in the biotechnology arts. He represents clients in a wide range of life sciences and biotechnologies, including CRISPR/Cas genomic editing technologies, cancer therapeutics, disease and viral diagnostics, agricultural crop improvement, stem cell technologies and therapeutic transplantation, viral vector development, and food and beverage processing. His clientele includes multinational corporations, small private biotechnology companies, academics and research institutions. Edward also advises in-house patent counsels, technology transfer managers, business units and laboratory scientists.
Edward is highly skilled in drafting and prosecuting US patent applications, PCT/WIPO administration and supervising foreign patent prosecution. His experience also includes patentability assessments, management of complex patent portfolios, freedom-to-operate analyses, license and research agreement drafting, due diligence investigations, litigation support, reexamination proceedings and design patent preparation and prosecution.
Edward received his JD from the University of San Francisco School of Law, where he received a Certificate in Intellectual Property and Technology Law with honors. Prior to his legal career, he was an academic scientist with a research interest in the molecular basis of cancer. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Colorado at Boulder in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, where he was a funded fellow of the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program. Edward received a PhD from the University of Chicago’s Department of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology, and his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Bowdoin College.
