Emily Jane Cook said that because Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) efforts to track payments to physician practices that hospitals acquire and treat as outpatient departments could be used to monitor compliance, “any CMS policy or payment change based on these data collection efforts … could significantly impact activity in physician practice acquisitions.” Eric Zimmerman addressed how CMS efforts to bundle ambulatory payment classifications will force hospitals to keep a closer eye on costs of medical device purchased. “These changes are going to focus hospitals even more on cost control and alter dynamics between hospitals and device manufacturers,” Mr. Zimmerman said.
