A Private Practitioner’s Thoughts on Qui Tam Suits

Overview

Peter Faber wrote this bylined letter to the editor criticizing the use of qui tam lawsuits to collect state taxes. “If, as proponents of qui tam suits claim, state revenue departments do not have the resources to detect tax fraud, … the answer is to provide them with more resources and not to enlist private individuals to act as vigilantes,” Mr. Faber wrote. “Qui tam lawsuits do not come for free as far as the government is concerned. They take up the time and money of the courts. That money would be better spent by providing state revenue departments with larger budgets.”
