Jennifer Geetter said many consumers don’t understand that the health data they share using an app on a smart device may be used in ways they hadn’t intended (such as for marketing purposes), adding that such data typically isn’t protected by federal medical privacy laws. Ms. Geetter also noted that hackers may access medical data shared through an app, so “the more data you have online, the more likely you’ll be part of a breach – and that data could be embarrassing.”
