William earned this recognition for his outstanding achievements in the areas of tax, corporate, and pro bono legal services. He was selected from a large pool of Chinese and international lawyers in China.

As a partner at MWE China, William leads the China tax team and specializes in tax compliance, tax planning, tax controversy, and outbound investment advisory services, with a particular emphasis on M&A and transaction tax advice, IPO tax guidance, tax due diligence, tax restructuring, post-deal integration, and tax compliance review. He also provides general corporate and compliance solutions in respect of various complicated legal issues. He has advised numerous multinational companies and China-based clients across a wide range of industries, and has extensive experience in the development and implementation of tax strategies for mergers and acquisitions, cross-border restructuring, and the local corporate tax practices in mainland China and Hong Kong. William’s qualifications in law, accounting and investment, enables him to deliver not just legal and tax advice, but also comprehensive business solutions to clients.

William also leads the pro bono team at MWE China, which is committed to giving back to the community and assisting those who may otherwise be unable to afford legal services. He and his team are proactively promoting pro bono services in China. Under William’s encouragement, an increasing number of lawyers from MWE China and other law firms from different practices have represented and advised, and will continue to assist, many pro bono clients.

“William Zhang is a young but sophisticated lawyer and partner of our firm. We trust him to handle all of the tax cases for our firm’s most important clients,” said John Huang, managing partner of the MWE China. “We are very happy to share this news with our clients and friends. The Firm congratulates William on his achievement and we wish him continued success in his professional career.”

McDermott has a strategic alliance with the People’s Republic of China (PRC)-licensed firm MWE China. As a PRC-licensed firm, MWE China’s lawyers are allowed to maintain their Chinese law licenses; allowing them to communicate with Chinese government agencies on legal issues, collect evidence and represent clients in Chinese courts and before Chinese regulatory bodies. The strategic alliance therefore allows both firms to function as an integrated firm in essentially all respects of service delivery while offering clients the benefit of full legal representation on both sides of the Pacific and in Europe.

ALB honors the “Top 15 Rising Lawyers in China” to showcase ambitious, up-and-coming young lawyers across China who possess strong potential to become future leaders. ALB’s selection criterion included excellent professional reputations, proven records of outstanding client service, experience, client feedback, industry knowledge, a record of pro bono service, and the potential for growth.
