Todd Solomon called the Supreme Court’s Obergefell ruling “a big relief for employees as well as large employers operating in multiple states as it really eases administration” of medical benefit plans for same-sex married couples. Mr. Solomon added that while fully insured medical plans likely must cover same-sex spouses, self-insured plans may try to deny coverage – “but if they do so they are at risk of facing challenges under federal discrimination law.”
