CHICAGO (June 2, 2015) – Avani Macaluso and Deepak Tamasker were selected by the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) for recognition as “rising stars” at the 16th Annual Human Rights Awards held on Thursday, May 28, 2015. The NIJC “Rising Star Award” acknowledges lawyers who are emerging as leaders by providing outstanding pro bono representation to NIJC’s immigrant clients.
Avani and Deepak have worked with NIJC to successfully represent pro bono clients in a number of immigration matters, including obtaining asylum for LGBT immigrants fleeing persecution and helping young immigrants to receive protection from removal under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA).
NIJC, a longtime pro bono partner of McDermott Will & Emery, is committed to ensuring human rights protections and access to justice for all immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. The organization provides direct legal services to, and advocates for, these populations through policy reform, impact litigation and public education.
