California Cities Eye Taxation of Streaming Services

Stephen Kranz said the fact that dozens of California cities may tax online video services reflects “a coordinated effort among the cities and their representatives to expand the tax base to cover streaming content. California’s the most recent state to hit the radar in terms of significant activity.” Mr. Kranz added that expanding taxes without changing the tax code is “an approach that shifts the burden of challenging a new tax to the judiciary” as taxpayers “are forced into court.”
