Leon Liu of MWE China Law Offices explained the challenges for foreign law firms expanding in China. “Just because you are under one roof, doesn’t mean you understand or accept each other’s culture, tradition, compensation system and interaction with the government,” Mr. Liu said. Since the creation of its strategic alliance with McDermott, MWE China (led by John Huang and Kevin Qian) has functioned as McDermott’s China office, while maintaining its legal status as a Chinese law firm. “We operate very much like one team,” Mr. Liu continued. “Our integration is probably greater than that between many international firms’ China and other offices.”
