Daniel Gottlieb agreed with an Office of Inspector General report that contractors tasked with detecting and deterring Medicare fraud have not received CMS guidance on reviewing electronic records for evidence of copy-and-paste fraud, saying that “for these contractors, the line is not clear between what can and should be copied and what is fraud. They are just falling back on general rules that were created for the paper world.” Mr. Gottlieb added that anticipated CMS guidance for contractors will help them more thoroughly review electronic records for evidence of fraud.
