Corporate Tax Team Joins McDermott’s Premier Tax Practice

WASHINGTON, DC (May 3, 2016) – McDermott Will & Emery announced today that Jay M. Singer has joined the Firm as a partner in its Tax Practice Group. Mr. Singer will be joined by counsel, David Sherwood; and both will be based in Washington, DC. Together, they bring with them extensive experience advising some of the world’s largest multinationals on the tax aspects of complex corporate transactions, financial products and partnerships.

Mr. Singer previously headed the corporate tax practice of a leading boutique tax firm. He focuses his practice on the tax aspects of corporate transactions, particularly domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, tax-free spin-offs and internal restructurings. Mr. Singer has represented some of the world’s largest multinationals in the tax aspects of their M&A transactions; and private equity firms on the tax structuring of complex acquisitions and dispositions. He was previously a Senior Manager at Deloitte Tax LLP. Prior to that, he served as an attorney in the national office of the Internal Revenue Service, drafting corporate tax regulations and other published guidance.

Mr. Sherwood was previously a partner in the corporate tax practice of a leading boutique tax firm. He focuses his practice on corporate and partnership taxation. He also advises on the tax treatment of stock and financial products, as well as the disclosure of tax shelters and other reportable transactions. Mr. Sherwood incorporates his training in economics, mathematics and business valuation to provide comprehensive and practical tax advice from a legal and financial perspective.

Mr. Singer received his BA from Saint Louis University, a JD from American University – Washington College of Law, and an LLM in Taxation from Georgetown University. He is frequently quoted by the tax press as an expert on corporate tax issues, and is the Vice-chair of the American Bar Association Tax Section’s Affiliated & Related Corporations Committee and Vice-chair of the DC Bar Corporate Tax Committee.

Mr. Sherwood received his BA in economics-mathematics from Columbia University where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa, an MA in Economics from Harvard University and a JD from Harvard Law School, where he was a John M. Olin Fellow in Law and Economics.
