Linda Doyle addressed implications of a new Labor Department program to help states enhance misclassification detection and enforcement, saying that “misclassification is very common in construction because of the temporary nature of the work,” particularly in that a classification of “temporary does not equal” one of independent contractor. Many employers are “naive and blissfully ignorant” when it comes to classifying their workers correctly, Ms. Doyle said, adding that the new program may help focus on fixing the problem.
