Mark Selinger analyzed the increase in wealthy family private investment firms putting more of their capital directly into deals, saying that after the frustration and diminished returns private equity investors experienced following the 2008 financial crisis, “A lot of investors felt the timing was right to try their hand at direct investing.” However, he added, because this involvement in the “direct investing world is, with some notable exceptions, a less-than-five-year phenomenon, it is too early to see if the trend will continue, or if the flame will go out.”
