McDermott pro bono lawyers, on behalf of the Mattachine Society, secured a US District Court’s ruling ordering the FBI to search for and release thousands of documents it initially said it could not find or declined to release which pertain to an anti-gay “purge” in the 1950s that caused the firing of thousands of gay federal employees. The court responded to McDermott’s Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed for the Mattachine Society in 2016.
