Eric Zimmerman predicted that new CMS rules on classifying labor markets and recalculating hospital wage index payments based a hospital’s rural or urban designation “are going to move money around on the table.” Mr. Zimmerman said there are steps that rural critical access hospitals (CAHs) can take to retain their status, but other rural hospitals may lose their designations because they are no longer classified in a rural area.
